It’s been more than three decades since Tom Cruise played the role of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in the beloved 1986 flick Top Gun. And now, the action star is back in the first full-length trailer for Top Gun: Maverick, and it’s clear he has the need for speed, and a little bit of nostalgia.
This time around, Pete Mitchell is a Top Gun instructor for a new class of recruits, and the two-and-a-half minute trailer begins with a voice calling him “one of the finest pilots this program has ever produced.”

“His exploits are legendary,” says the unidentified voice. “What he has to teach you may very well mean the difference between life and death.”
After Cruise’s character admits he wasn’t expecting an invitation to return to Top Gun, his colleagues tell him “they’re called orders, Maverick.” The trailer then cuts to different action-packed scenes complete with Maverick on his motorcycle, shirtless guys playing beach volleyball, and intense dogfights in the air.
The new trailer gives fans a first real look at the upcoming sequel after Cruise gave fans a sneak peek during Comic-Con. According to Us Weekly, the 57-year-old surprised everyone when he showed up in Hall H at the Paramount Pictures and Skydance presentation of Terminator: Dark Fate to announce the release date of the highly-anticipated film.

He told the crowd that they have been patient with him for 34 years, and he felt it was his responsibility to deliver.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski, Top Gun: Maverick also stars John Hamm, Ed Harris, Val Kilmer, Jennifer Connelly, Jean Louisa Kelly, Miles Teller, Jay Ellis, and Glen Powell.
Ellis sang Cruise’s praises back in September, saying that he was a mentor, filmmaker, and someone who has a very strong point of view that he can communicate very clearly. The 37-year-old loved working with Cruise because not only did he allow them to “be able to go out and play,” but he also looked out for his cast and crew.
Originally, the plan was to release the sequel this past summer. But, Paramount announced in the August of 2018 that they were pushing the project back one year.
