During the Riverdale panel at San Diego Comic-Con (Sunday, July 21st), the show’s executive producer, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa announced that Luke’s long time friend and Beverly Hills 90201 co-star, Shannen Doherty, will guest star on the show as a way to “reflect Perry’s enduring legacy and the indelible imprint his character” had on the series over the past three years.
Roberto announced on the panel that he and Luke had always had the intentions of bringing Shannen on to the show in way or another, as Luke has wanted her presence to be a part of the show since season one. Unfortunately, Shannen will be joining the show due to heart-breaking circumstances, however, the cast have made it very clear that the tribute episode is beautiful and has been very therapeutic for them all.
“They were such good friends, and when we were putting together this tribute episode, we wanted to make it as special as possible, and so we asked Shannen to do a pivotal, super-emotional role. She read the script and immediately said ‘yes.’ It’s very impactful,”.
Cole Sprouse, who plays Jughead Jones, also shared his thoughts and feelings towards having Shannen on the show;
“It was cathartic for all of us, it put the cherry on top of that episode and made a nice tribute. She was overjoyed to have the ability to share some of the burden of Luke’s passing that she had gone through, in a cathartic setting with the rest of us.”
