Diversifying what we know of indie-pop and giving it a whole new spin is Daniel Ellsworth who brings “Lost In The Rhythm” to the table which is one addictive track. He apparently restricted and limited himself when creating this track, giving it a freeing and genuine energy, which completely works and gives a subtle meaning to the title as he got lost in the rhythm of the track there and then rather than over-producing it or adding layers upon layers. The accompanying music video is fun and interesting, with Daniel Ellsworth playing every single character on the talk show set. The release of this single acts as the follow-up to his feature on all five tracks on Lake Girlfriend’s EP, titled “Notes to Self”.

Daniel Ellsworth is an extraordinary musician renowned for his ability to craft compulsively catchy hooks that defy genre classification. As a prolific songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, he fearlessly traverses a diverse range of musical styles and projects, displaying a chimerical approach to his artistry. Combining buoyant pop, carefree indie rock, and pulse-driven hip-hop, Daniel Ellsworth’s music evokes a fusion akin to the meeting of Brian Wilson and Pharrell Williams. Currently releasing his solo debut EP series, “I HAVE / NO CLUE / WHAT / I’M DOING”, he unveils a stunning, idiosyncratic collection of pop gems that showcase his vast range and depth as a musician. Alongside his work as a solo artist, Daniel Ellsworth spearheads multiple endeavours, including Daniel Ellsworth & The Great Lakes, Chaos Emeralds, and DARKMINDS, consistently delivering inventive melodies and unforgettable hooks. With each project, he captivates audiences and pushes the boundaries of contemporary pop music, establishing himself as a true innovator within the industry. In doing so, his music has gone on to feature in films, TV series episodes, and ad campaigns. Daniel Ellsworth continues to shine with every new release, managing to show his artistic vision in every way.

Talking about this single, Daniel Ellsworth said: “First and foremost this was me wanting to make a late-night-living-room dance jam about leaving all the bullshit of the world behind and disappearing somewhere with the person you love, but writing and recording ‘Lost In The Rhythm’ was also a personal exercise in simplicity and restraint. I wanted to limit the amount of instruments on the track, limit what the drums were doing, the vocals are the very first take…I wanted to do all that and see if I could still make something interesting. I’ve spent a lot of time over the years always wanting to add more layers and make rhythms more complicated, which can sometimes get in the way of the song. With ‘Lost In The Rhythm’ there was no overthinking. The limitation was actually incredibly freeing.”

The music video was directed by the actress, Beth Triffon – who is probably best known for playing Joanne Schwartz in The Goldbergs. She spoke about the music video, saying:

“What I love most about making music videos is the invitation to be as imaginative and absurd as possible. Anything goes in a music video – you create the world and the rules. Daniel played all the instruments on this song, so the idea of him portraying each member of the band came pretty quickly and only grew from there. If we were going to show the band performing, we wanted to think of a natural place for that to happen and loved the idea of a late-night talk show, but to be stylistically interesting, maybe it’s a late-night talk show that would be on at 2 AM in our hometowns.

Once we landed on the concept of Daniel playing all the characters, the meaning of the song completely changed for me. All of the characters are an extension of himself. So, what started out as a love song about a crush or a partner, became a self-love anthem where you cheer yourself on and act as your best support system – that’s definitely a theme in the video.

We knew that to execute the concept properly, we’d need to employ some camera trickery. Daniel plays 12 characters in this video and oftentimes, there were up to four Daniels in the same shot! To have so many “Daniels” on the screen simultaneously, the cinematographer, Kerry Henderson, and I had to do a good amount of spatial planning to make sure that each character never interfered in another’s space. If they did, as the lead singer does, then we used a green screen so the drummer could still appear behind him. We really had to perfect each shot, because once we started shooting one character’s coverage, the camera couldn’t move at all.

The whole shoot was an intricate puzzle, everything had to fit precisely. Between all the camera planning and the many wardrobe changes, it was a lot to keep organized. Watching all the pieces come together in editing was really thrilling. We definitely felt like the video was something special. While watching cuts, I would truly have moments where I’d forget that Daniel was our only actor. It felt like a full cast to me!”

As Beth Triffon explains, the music video is intricate, with Daniel Ellsworth playing 12 characters, in total. It’s a highly engaging music video and we can’t even imagine how much work and effort went into creating it, but it certainly paid off. The viewers are captivated from the get-go and we never quite know what each character is going to do next. The concept is one you can’t help but love and appreciate and works so well with the song. On top of that, there’s also a dance move running throughout, which is certainly aimed at the TikTok audience – expect videos of TikTok users doing this exact dance move.
